Book 2 of the Award-Winning horror comedy series The Black Knight Chronicles!

In the second volume of The Black Knight Chronicles, vampire detectives Jimmy Black and Greg Knightwood investigate a series of assaults plaguing the alleys of Charlotte NC. Along the way they battle trolls, bigotry, fairies, dragons and small minds on the way to a knock-down battle royal inside a steel cage. The boys find themselves fighting evil in alleys, trolls in bars, dragons in FairyLand, and trying to scrub the sparkle off after a battle with vicious Fae in the hall of the Fairy Queen.

Yeah, really. All that and vampires, too.

This non-sparkly snarky vampire comedy series has drawn favorable comparison to the works of Joss Whedon, Kevin Smith and Jim Butcher's Dresden Files.

Praise for Volume 1

"The book was entertaining and laugh-out-loud funny from the first chapter where we're introduced to Jimmy in the clutches of a vampire hunter, until the end when the case is solved and Jimmy gets the girl. Sort of. " - L.C. Evans

"Hard Day's Knight Vol 1 written by John Hartness is a surprisingly refreshing take on the sudden interest in all things fang and blood sucking related. " - Syria Says

"But overall, this book was a fun, funny read. I could see it turned into a television series. It reminded me of a kind of Buffy the Vampire Slayer for men." - Julie Christensen.

Book number two of a six book urban fantasy series. I purchased and read the POD (print on demand) trade paperback. I suspect that there will be more books in the series. The book length is more novella than novel but that is also a function of the large trade paperback format. I am reading the third book in the series now and have added books 4 and 5 to my Amazon cart.

As mentioned, a very quick read due to its novella size (163 pages in trade paperback). The main two characters are vampire nerds who have formed their own private investigation firm. The other characters are interesting also. The author is expanding his universe by adding Fae, dragons, trolls, and other faerie creatures. And the first vampire blood rules that I ever remember reading, ten pints of blood every three days to maintain, preferably very two days, and ten pints per day to remain at full strength.

And full of snarkiness.

Back In Black The Black Knight Chronicles Book 2 edition by John G Hartness Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Another great one! This is the second in the series and I enjoyed it almost as much as I did the first one. Some great quips between Jimmy and Sabrina as always and loving the vampire detective agency! In this second book, the guys are investigating a string of violent attacks in Charlotte. Along the way they meet up with fairies, a dragon, trolls and they come in contact with Lilith again. Can't wait to read the next book!
Back in Black, the second volume of Black Knight Chronicles, is now available on paper for us old fart who prefer the feel of a book in our hands to a cold electronic device. (Strange attitude for a geek to take but there it is).

Unfortunately I'm going to have to disappoint John a bit with this review. Don't get me wrong, the book was good and I still recommend it but I felt it a bit of a come down from the first one. When you set the bar as high as he did with the first book it's kind of hard to always reach the same mark all the time. Even world record high jumpers don't set a new mark every time they compete even when they give a good performance and thus it is here. Back in Black is good, the characterizations, which are Hartness' strong point are as strong as ever, loved the dragon, and the snarkiness of James and geekiness of Greg are in full bloom. My main problem was with the plot and settings. Sorry but Fairyland just didn't do it for me the way the urban setting, even if it was Southern big city, did. Don't know, the contrast of a couple of vampires running around in a normal city playing detective just felt better than putting a bunch of supernatural beings in a rainbow colored Candy land. I also felt the end a bit weak. As I said earlier, still a good, and more importantly fun, read, just not up to what I've come to expect of John. Since he plans to continue the series and considering the way this book opened up not only his cast of characters but also his cast of supernatural creatures I have a feeling this was a way of introducing all this in to the series so we'll eagerly await future developments in the further adventures of the Black Knight Detective Agency. In the meantime pick up this book and read it if you haven't already. Any Hartness is still a whole lot better than none at all.
snark-fest, urban-fantasy, action-adventure, vampire, fae
Another winner. The hero and his sidekick are vampire working with human detective Sabrina of the Charlotte PD whose cousin has been horribly injured by an unknown supernatural creature. Bad movie quotes and lots of snarks pepper this violence filled yet fun fast moving tale populated by trolls, changelings, and even a dragon as they track a menace in their city. A truly engaging book with a glitch or two, but still a fun read.
Nick J. Russo does a great job as narrator!

My Thoughts Another great story in this fun UF series, in which we meet some new creatures (fairies, trolls, dragons) and find out how to make vampires sparkle (fairy blood, who'da thunk it?). I was a bit perturbed to already find a continuity error, in that the first book specifically stated they were able to see themselves in the mirror, while in this one they cannot, but overall the editing was better. Not perfect, but better.

Fans of more lighthearted UF should enjoy this series, which I am enjoying reading a great deal.

Series Information Back in Black is the second book in the Black Knight Chronicles.
Book 1 Hard Day's Knight, review linked here where formatting allowed
Novella 1 Movie Knight
Book 3 Knight Moves
Novella 2 Black Magic Woman
There is also a book of short stories called Knight (un)Life - Black Knight Shorts Vol. 1, which I do not currently have. He has a number of other books, including his Bubba Monster Hunter books, a number of which I currently have as well.

Disclosure I bought this book for myself (yes, I paid cash MONEY for this one). Later I saw it on NetGalley and added it there, since I planned to read it anyway. All opinions are my own.
